Cliques. Fads. Popularity. We see these things start gaining notoriety in high school. People start forming crews to differentiate themselves from the status quo. And while I am all for the idea of being different and unique, I hate it when people do it just for the sake of being different. I'm not exactly talking about a hipster, but think about this way: when EVERYONE starts acting different just for the sake of being different, doesn't it make you all the same?
Let me give you a brief background of why I decided to write this rant. As I'm sure most of you know by now, Troy Davis was executed earlier today. Not a big deal right? People get executed quite often, unfortunately. But this case was different. "Murder in the name of justice" is what people are calling this specific execution. Why? Long story short, Davis was accused of murdering a police officer in Georgia. Evidence was questionable and key witnesses withdrew their previous testimonies, claiming they were pressured to wrongly accuse Davis. That didn't stop the justice system as they went through with the execution regardless.
I will be completely honest right now. I heard about this case very recently. I read about it on Yahoo! News not too long ago. And I will not be surprised if more than 75% of people currently tweeting about this case on my Twitter timeline knew about this case any longer than I have. Yet they tweet about it like they personally knew Troy Davis.
Before I go any further, I should clarify that I am not against the attention this case is getting for we should always call out against injustice no matter how big or small. The fact that the United States justice system is entirely fucked up (excuse the language), is absolutely inexcusable. And I salute all those who dedicate their education and their careers to stop injustice and work for peace. While only God knows if Troy Davis was innocent or not, we should never stand for injustice and it is our right as humans to cry out and fight for real justice.
Enough of that. Now if you know me at all, you know I hate bandwagoners. Oh, yes.
I cannot explain in words how much I hate when people jump on something just because it's the popular thing to do. It kinda goes like:
Person 1: "Hey, what you doin' tomorrow?"
Person 2: "Nothin much. OH but there's a protest at Atlantic's HQ. Might hit it up."
Person 1: "Protest for what?"
Person 2: "Lupe can't get him album out unless we protest."
Person 1: "Lupe? That's the guy who made Superstar right? I'll come, I got no plans anyway."
Person 1's Tweet later that day: "EFF Atlantic!!! Release Lupe's album!!! Eff record labels!!!"
See what I mean?
Honestly, how many of you guys cared about this Troy Davis case until it started making national news? I understand that this is another fallacy in our justice system and if that's honestly why you're hyped about this, then by all means go ahead and stay hype. Let this motivate you to actually stand up and do something. However, like the homie S-Preme said on Twitter earlier, if you're just gonna forget about this whole thing by next week, then why bother at all? You're simply giving a monkey's ass about this case because everyone else is.
The biggest injustice in our society is not those made by the higher powers in our government. It's that we as citizens of this government do not care for the right reasons. Our intentions are off. And that is why injustice will continue. When will we start caring about cases like the one of Troy Davis not because everyone else is, but because yet another human life was taken possibly by mistake? When will we start caring about the hundreds of thousands of innocent lives taken by wars driven by greed? When will we start caring about the young men that lose their lives on the streets of Chicago simply due to pride and foolishness? When will we start caring about injustice being imposed on all of humanity? Because until we sincerely care to stop these injustices, there are going to be hundreds of cases like Troy Davis. Even if you don't see it as the #1 trending topic on Twitter.
Think about that. Get your mind right.
